Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA 2wei! Episode 08 REVIEW
Fate/kaleid liner プリズマ☆イリヤ
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei! – 08
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Rin and Luvia observe from a distance Ilya and Kuro as they run in P.E. class. Despite Iri’s assurances, they still have concerns, and even have questions they’d like to ask Ilya’s mother. On cue, she shows up and asks that the two of them escort her. Considering she’s Shiro’s adoptive mother, Luvia accepts and Rin goes along as well. Ilya senses she’s under observation, but never actually sees Iri, Luvia, or Rin. Kuro senses them as well, but unlike Ilya, she does spot them and confronts them. Iri and Kuro have a mother-daughter moment, after which Iri asks Rin and Luvia to hold off on doing their duty regarding the card. After school, Rin goes to check the ley line under the temple and discovers it hasn’t been sealed like they thought.
Meanwhile, a mysterious woman in a man’s suit enters Luvia’s mansion and is greeted with an attack by August. The woman demands to see Luvia and threatens to go hunting for her when Luvia sends an attack greeting of her own, which the woman easily swats away. As they fight, Rin returns home and realizes something is wrong. She discovers that Church Mage Association Enforcer Bazett Fraga McRemitz is there, demanding Luvia turn over the Class Cards to her. Rin bides her time as August and Luvia are unable to scratch Bazett. Bazett knocks out August and is untouched by Luvia’s armory trap. Rin gets direct hits on Bazett, but again, nothing. Luvia causes the house to explode. Ilya, who’s been sensing something is wrong, gets Kuro and Ruby to join her after they hear an explosion. Getting through the perception barrier at Luvia’s front gate, they see an untouched Bazett coming for them.
Thoughts/Review:
Well, things certainly took a turn to the very interesting this week after some additional character moments.
With Iri still not returning to her husband’s side, I liked how she’s checking in on both of her daughters, but primarily Kuro. It really was a sweet moment that Iri and Kuro had, whereby Kuro got some motherly love and attention, something she’d always craved.
Iri likes to play dumb, but she really is quite sharp as well as being powerful and highly persuasive, as evidenced by Luvia and Rin readily going along with her crazy “spy on my daughters” scheme, but also in how she got them to agree to not report on Kuro to the Mage Association.
Although the rivalry between Rin and Luvia still exists, I like how they work well together and have this understanding between them. I like seeing this kind of character growth.
It was interesting to me that while Ilya sensed she was being observed at school, only Kuro actually made the discovery. Kuro was dismissive of Ilya, but ironically, it was Ilya who kept sensing something was wrong while Bazett kicked August’s and Luvia’s keester. Kuro and Ruby sensed nothing. Had it not been for Luvia’s suicide bomb, I doubt Kuro and Ruby would have even had a clue.
I was disappointed that Luvia, Rin, and August were unable to even scratch Bazett. After all, Rin and Luvia are experienced mages, and August is clearly an experienced soldier. But even when Rin gets a surprise attack on Bazett and scores a hit, she’s not touched. When Luvia does her suicide bomb, Bazett is untouched.
I realize that Ilya is the star of this series, and that Miyu and Kuro are her co-stars. As such, I realize that things are being set up so that we see just how powerful Bazett is so that Ilya, Miyu, and Kuro defeating her has more meaning. I guess I just would have liked to have seen Bazett have taken a little bit of damage instead of being someone in a game’s god mode.
So, how does Bazett survive all that? Clearly she has powerful magics to be able to do the things she does, including that power punch that knocked August out. She must have some kind of massively powerful barrier to come out untouched when Luvia blew up her mansion, and Bazett was at ground zero.
The bigger question in my mind is how do the three girls overcome this monster? Ilya isn’t nearly as powerful any more. Miyu has power, but does she carry the Class Cards on her, or did Bazett somehow acquire them after Luvia’s failed attack of desperation (meaning Miyu cannot turn into Saber)? Kuro is basically Archer, but if she runs out of mana, then what? Further, if Bazett lands a blow to Ilya, Kuro also gets damaged.
Regardless, this new arc with Bazett has turned up the interest level quite a lot for me. I’m really looking forward to the next episode.
UTW made the same mistake CR made here. Bazett is a Sealing Designation Enforcer, she can’t be an agent of the Church, because Enforcers are members of the Mage’s Association. I will shamelessly copy what was already written in the comments on the UTW page:
Raze (that comment is from Fate/Zero btw): ”I completely missed this one >_<. 協会 ("association", referring to the Mage's Association) and 教会 ("the Church") are perfect homonyms, which makes this a pretty common mistake to make."
See this page here for comparison (second-to-last panel): http://arinashi.com/img/3r0u24l1.jpg
The furigana is of course saying "kyoukai", but the kanji are the ones for "association".
So… there is lots of filler material here. This episode covers around 1/2, maybe 2/3, of chapter 13. The first half with Kuro in school was completely filler and the fight with August and Luvia did happen in the manga, but only a few panels were shown. As requested by the mangaka, Silver Link extended this fight.
I don't mind the filler though, Kuro deserved more characterization and I am sure 2wei will get another season, because the Bazett arc will likely be the last one of this season, if it's gonna be ten episodes like last season. The scenes with Rin, Luvia and Iri were also very funny (favorite shot:http://i.imgur.com/5YVa41ql.jpg). Luvia trying to get sympathy points from Shirou's stepmother was very in-character. ^_^ Also, the extended fight finally allowed August to shine. Man, that guy is awesome. I want to have such a butler. I especially loved that moment here: http://i.imgur.com/RguRms9.gif
Btw, lol at Miyu trying to get mizuyoukan from a 7-11 for Luvia.
Just to make that clear. Bazett is a freaking Sealing Designation Enforcer, which means she is trained and specialized in taking out high-class magi. Most of her targets, who got Sealing Designations, were heretics, and most of the time they were extremely dangerous and problematic magi. Kiritsugu’s father, Norikata, was designated to be sealed in Fate/Zero for instance. Enforcers can be compared with the Church’s Executors, Kirei was an Executor. Kiritsugu also worked occasionally part-time as an Enforcer for the Association.
Yes, Luvia and Rin are extremely talented and the most powerful magi of their respective families in history, and they would have had a chance against Bazett if they knew more about her abilities and had the kaleidosticks’ help. Eva’f nggnpx ogj jnf npghnyyl irel rssrpgvir naq pna or sngny sbe Onmrgg. But even then Bazett is a special case here.
Bazett is the heir of the Fraga family, who can trace their lineage back to the Age of Gods, where the magecraft at that time could almost be viewed as True Magic nowadays. An elite house, specialized in rune magic and whose Sorcery Trait Tradition Carrier – God’s Holder, different from Magic Circuits, is said to have lasted for thousands of years. Bazett is reinforcing her entire body with rune magic, both for offense and defense and she is also a martial arts expert.
Bazett is Lancer’s original Master in Fate/stay night and also the plot-central character in Fate/hollow ataraxia. If she hadn’t been betrayed and backstabbed by Kirei, she would have been a serious threat for Rin and co. Bazett is weaker Kirei at his peak (in Fate/Zero), but she was able to fight against Servants in FHA. Fur rira znantrq gb qrsrng Fnore naq pnhfrq n qbhoyr XB ntnvafg Ynapre. So… it’s gonna be a tough fight for Ilya and friends.
Thanks for the correction.
Wow. Well, in that case, I’m glad Silver Link did extend it. I thought it was well done. Those are the kind of changes to the source manga material that I approve of.
Yeah, I agree. I was glad to see the moment between Kuro and Iri.
Hopefully, this goes more than ten episodes (or has another 2wei season).
I’ve never had it, but it doesn’t seem like that special of a desert, meaning I’d think it would be easy to find in Japan. For me, it seemed like a convenient way for Miyu to be out of the picture when Bazett arrived.
Thanks for the information on Bazett. ^_^
